Hi,
I’m sorry if my references to the SAS/SBS offended anyone. I did not mean to. I respect all the armed forces, and especialy the speial forces very much. I was just attempting to establish the different types of people that Hunter and Rink were, and their different attitudes to dealing with violence. They needed worthy opponents. Therefore I chose the SAS/SBS as they are some of the toughest guys in the world. Hunter and Rink are special forces at the time. There is great rivalry between all units and regiments, and there is quite often friction between them – a case of men proving who are the toughest of the bunch.

In the regards of 3 to 1: I had to make things a little more dangerous for Rink, or Hunter wouldn’t have intervened. Then they wouldn’t have shared the scene.

I hope this clears things up?

Anche io ritengo che Hilton non volesse fare un torto alle Forze Speciali inglesi, la cosa che mi aveva un pò infastidito era che il confronto fosse avvenuto (prima che intervenisse Hunter) in una proporzione di tre ad uno. Per il resto sottoscrivo quanto dici.
In merito a Leather, non lo conoscevo ma da quel che ho potuto vedere in rete, mi auspico che qualcuno decida di pubblicarlo anche in Italia, infatti non mi sembra che ci siano avventure di Dan Shepherd tradotte nella nostra lingua.

Sono contenta che sia piaciuto anche a te, l’Inseguitore. Io credo che mi leggerò anche gli altri del nostro amico Hunter.
Non credo che Hilton volesse denigrare i corpi SAS/SBS, anche Joe è un ex Special Forces, dopotutto, e se non ricordo male Rink è un ranger? (ora mi sfugge, il romanzo l’ho letto da un po’). Semmai forse voleva criticare un certo atteggiamento arrogante di chi si sente un dio. Tu hai mai letto Leather? Non so se sia stato tradotto in italiano. Ma nel suo Dead Men (altri uomini morti) lui racconta un episodio nel quale il suo protagonista, Dan Shepherd, ed altri SAS prendono per i fondelli dei Navy Seals.E’ molto divertente e non penso particolarmente offensivo per i Seals. Eppoi, al di là di un sano spirito di corpo, è noto che anche all’interno delle forze militari di una stessa nazione la competizione è altissima. Figurati tra alpha men americani e inglesi!
Un po’ di ironia, poi, non guasta mai.

Ho finito da poco di leggere “L’Inseguitore” e devo dire che le mie aspettative non sono state deluse, Matt Hilton è stata una piacevole rivelazione.
Notevole inoltre come sei venuta a capo della questione SAS/SBS, ti ringrazio per la delucidazione, (anche se mi dispiace un pò che Hilton abbia utilizzato proprio degli operatori delle Forze Speciali per rappresentare i personaggi degli sbruffoni attaccabrighe).

Costantino, come vedi mi piace andare in fondo alle cose, anche se sono di poca importanza come questa. Ho chiesto a Matt Hilton e lui, gentilmente, mi ha immediatamente risposto. Ti copioincollo la sua risposta:

And here’s why.

When I originally wrote DMD, it was three SBS men who Rink faught with (these are the Special Boat Service – the marine equivalent of the Special Air Service or SAS). When the book was sold to America, they did not think that anyone there would know who the SBS were, and in the edit asked if they could change it to the more famous SAS for clarity. This was agreed to, and also adopted by the UK edition to stop any confusion in the English language versions.

However, I believe that L’Inseguitore was translated from the original manuscript that I delivered, and therefore the SBS have remained in the story in the Italian version.

So, if you read the book in English, you will have read SAS. If you read it in Italian you will read SBS.
There are other tiny differences between the UK and US editions as well.

Ti traduco molto brevemente, nel caso non capissi l’inglese (e allora dovresti studiarlo, no?).
Nella prima stesura, si trattava effettivamente di tre SBS. Ma l’editore americano ha fatto presente a Matt che nessuno avrebbe saputo cosa un SBS fosse, mentre sicuramente tutti avrebbero riconosciuto la più famosa sigla SAS. QUindi i tre SBS sono diventati tre SAS in tutte le edizioni del romanzo in lingua inglese (US e UK). Alla Longanesi, per la traduzione, è invece arrivato il draft originale, con tre SBS (e non tre SAS) pronti a divertirsi con Rink.
QUindi, avevamo ragione entrambi. E io non più di te.
